Marian E. Washington, a trailblazer in women’s basketball, has been honored as a 2025 inductee into the UMKC Starr Women’s Hall of Fame.  This recognition celebrates her pioneering contributions to the sport and her enduring impact on women’s athletics.

A Legacy of Firsts

Washington’s career is marked by numerous groundbreaking achievements:

• Pioneering Athlete: She was among the first two Black women to play on a U.S. national team (1969-71), participating in the 1971 World Championship in São Paulo, Brazil.  

• Coaching Trailblazer: In 1973, Washington became the first African American woman to coach at a Division I level when she took the helm of the University of Kansas (KU) women’s basketball team.  She served as the head coach for 31 seasons, amassing a record of 560-363 and leading the Jayhawks to 11 NCAA Tournament appearances.  

• Advocate for Diversity: Washington made history as the first woman elected president of the Black Coaches Association and was the first individual to serve consecutive terms in this role.  

Recent Honors and Publications

In addition to her induction into the UMKC Starr Women’s Hall of Fame, Washington has been a finalist for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, reflecting her enduring influence in the sport.  In October 2024, she released her autobiography, FIERCE: My Fight for Nothing Less, offering an intimate look into her journey and the challenges she overcame.  

Enduring Influence

Washington’s legacy extends beyond her personal achievements. She has been a mentor and inspiration to countless athletes and coaches, including Hall-of-Famer Dawn Staley, who acknowledges that there is “no Dawn Staley without Coach Washington before her.”  Her induction into the UMKC Starr Women’s Hall of Fame not only honors her past contributions but also serves as a beacon for future generations in women’s athletics.
