Fifty-three years ago today, a mere 37 words changed the course of American history:
“No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”
With those words, Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972 became law—and with it, a revolution began.
At Legends of the Ball, Inc., we honor this milestone not just as a date on the calendar, but as a living, breathing legacy that continues to shape the lives of women and girls in sports, education, and leadership. Title IX opened doors that had long been shut. It gave young women the right to dream bigger, play harder, and lead boldly.
Before Title IX, fewer than 300,000 girls played high school sports. Today, that number exceeds 3.4 million [1]. Women now make up nearly 60% of college students, and they are increasingly represented in fields once considered off-limits—from engineering labs to boardrooms to basketball courts.
But Title IX is not just about numbers. It’s about power, equity, and access. It’s about the right to be seen, to be heard, and to be treated with dignity. It’s about the generations of women who refused to accept second-class status and the trailblazers—like Bernice Sandler, Rep. Patsy Mink, and Rep. Edith Green—who turned protest into policy [1].
And yet, the work is far from over.
Today, Title IX faces new challenges. From ongoing disparities in athletic funding and facilities to the rollback of protections for LGBTQIA+ students, the fight for equity in education continues [2]. As we celebrate this anniversary, we also recommit ourselves to defending and expanding the promise of Title IX—for every girl who picks up a basketball, every student who dares to lead, and every young woman who dreams of a future without limits.
As trailblazers of Title IX, Legends of the Ball, Inc. celebrates the 53rd anniversary of this life changing legislation with gratitude, reflection, and pride knowing we helped usher in a new era for women in education, sports, and opportunities in all areas. We know that the next 53 years of Title IX will be written by the bold, brilliant, and unstoppable women who follow in their footsteps. Continue to demand more!
Here’s to the past that paved the way—and the future we’re still building.
